Asthma is a disease that is affecting more and more people each passing day. Children are missing school and adults are unable to go to work.

In the world of asthma, you need to know that there are different types of asthma. Allergic asthma, nonallergic asthma like exercise induce asthma, nocturnal asthma, pregnancy and occupational asthma. Know matter what type you have, you need the right treatment.

You might have asthma and not know it.

Doctors might fail to notice that you have exercise induced asthma. Most people are familiar with asthma associated with persistent coughing that lingers on for weeks after the cold symptoms have ended or with someone who is wheezing. But not everyone is aware that you can have no coughing or wheezing and be suffering from an asthmatic episode. The doctor test your pulmonary function and you are 100% of predicted or expected . You look fine and you feel fine, so you think.

This is where it gets complicated, no one knows that you played sports all your life and that your lungs are therefore more developed then others. Consequently your lung capacity could be really 130% of predicted versus 100%. If your lung capacity is really 130% of predicted and your doctor test you and finds that you are at 100% of capacity, then you are having an asthmatic episode. If you are playing sports you can't give your complete best. You will get tired sooner than you should.

A child might play sports and after a few minutes go sit down and lay his head on his mom's lap, rest and moments later go and play again and after a few minutes, get tired, sits down again and rest, over and over again. Adults might go all their life and not know it. But if you get tired sooner than other people for your age and size and weight, then it is possible that you suffer from asthma.

Take the Olympics, 10 to 20% of all Olympic athletes including swimmers find out they have asthma.

If you have well developed lung capacity how do you find out?

Let your doctor know you have a well developed lung capacity, he/she will check your lung capacity, then give you an inhalation and retest your lung capacity 20 minutes later. If the test results improves 10% or better, it shows that you have exercise induce asthma.

What happens next?

The doctor will prescribe medication for you to take 20 minutes before doing any aerobic exercise. You'll find you'll perform much better and last longer before getting tired. Your team might win the championship game with you being able to function in your full capacity. Just by getting the right medication.
